Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield

[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.

More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.

Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.

Are they too late?]

Well...golly, there's got to be some way, right? It would be terrible if there wasn't. I don't want to think this world is so cruel!

[It would be really depressing if there wasn't something the people with no castle couldn't do to get home...]

I don't know, Chica. We've been out here for a few years now and no one's gone home yet.

If there is a way, we haven't figured it out yet. [A sigh] I hope we find one too, though, for real. I miss Massachusetts.

There's an awful lot in this world that remains to be seen, right? Or at least widely known. Perhaps there's a way home somewhere out there for all of us.

Oh! So you're from the Northeast then? What is it like in Massachusetts?

Maybe. I'd sure be on that train outta here. I am pretty much done with creepy magical worlds filled with evil castles.

[At least he seems to cheer up at her recognition of an Earth location] Yeah! And it's...pretty quiet. I live in this really small town called New Salem. It's okay, though, I guess.

[The segregation kind of sucks but what can you do?]

Hoo hoo, I don't blame you!

[She hums.] New Salem, eh? I was only aware of the plain old Salem. I'm from Maple Valley in Washington state.

That sounds just about as sleepy as my town does. Anything with the word 'valley' in it's gotta be pretty relaxed.

Yes, it was quite mundane! Maybe not particularly sleepy at times, but very nice.

Oh? Did anything smoking happen out there?

If you mean smoking as in troublesome, then yes! I had the wonderful misfortune of being the only target of a troublesome and terribly overpowered cat. If he'd never shown up, the town would probably doze all day and night.

I...actually meant if anything cool happened but okaaaay.

Was he like a werecat? Because those things are nasty.

Oh! Hm. Well, no, I suppose not anything particularly cool.

I'm not sure what he was, actually. My friends and I call him GCat. He can teleport, and his favorite thing to do is to send me places. One time he zapped me out to the edge of town in the middle of a downpour! Not a fun afternoon, I can tell you.
