Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield

[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.

More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.

Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.

Are they too late?]

Thirty, give or take a few. And yeah, if the building was big enough, there's a town hall here, we could use, or the saloon.

[She nods, her eyes roaming over the buildings]

Okay. How are the structures? Are the doors and windows still in one piece? [she pauses, thinking] We should probably board up at least some of the windows either way.

That's a good idea, and it's one of the few building's that's held up, thank god,
kungfuwitch: (just try me)

[She looks back at him]

Building up the fence and fixing up the defenses overall is a good idea but I honestly think putting everyone in one place and focusing on that building is the best defense. That way we can take more time to fortify that one structure instead of dividing the effort between a bunch of them.

That's not a bad plan, we can do that. I'll see if I can convince some of the others to come out and help.
kungfuwitch: (Everything's working out for once)

[She smiles warmly]

I hope they will. We're only here to help.

They've just had a rough time of it, they'll come around.
kungfuwitch: (patiently optimistic)

[She pauses, thinking for a moment]

How long have you been in this world? [Wait, that sounded rude] I'm sorry. It's just that I've been here for a couple of years and we know so little about the place. I'm just curious.

Since home? I've been here... [he scrunches his face up in thought, glancing upwards] coming onto nine years now. I lived in Draconis for a good while, before it eventually crumbled.

We're more than happy to give your whatever information we can. We don't have all the answers, but we've travelled along here enough to know a thing or two.
kungfuwitch: (breaking my heart)

[She whistles]

Wow. I can't imagine. Was there ever anyone else from your world here? [She pauses, realizing what a personal question that is. Looking down she adds] My family was here when I got here but they've all gone home. I've been the only one here for almost a year, now... I guess I'm wondering if that gets any easier.

[He shakes his head] No, no one from my world. [There's a delicate pause, then a sigh] I've got a family back home. Wife, kids. It doesn't really get any easier, being away from them.
kungfuwitch: (words I never wanted to say.)

[She reaches out to touch his arm]

I'm sorry. Truly I am. I think the cruelest thing this place does is take us away from our loved ones.

[He'll offer her a small smile] No, what's crueller is when it make us forget them.

[Her face falls and she looks down]

As someone who's been forgotten more than once I completely agree.

I've been lucky enough not to forget anyone, but some people in our group have...lost people. Some haven't even managed to find out which person has been taken from them.
kungfuwitch: (is this the real life is it just fantasy)

[personal profile] kungfuwitch 2013-09-25 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[She nods] My loss isn't a memory, either. I've known enough people who have. Personally I think it's the worst loss this place can give to people.

I agree, it's taking a part of you that's supposed to be sacred.
kungfuwitch: (this is ridiculous)

Taking away an item is one thing but once you start messing with people's minds? You risk changing who they are. If I forgot any of my sisters I don't think I'd be the same person at all.

I can understand that. There are people in my life I know have shaped me in so many ways. It'd be impossible to think who'd I be without my memories of them.
