Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield

[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.

More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.

Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.

Are they too late?]

I showed up just a couple of days before the castle lost it. I got out and I've been with the Doc and the others ever since.

The castle ... [he frowns, trying to remember the names of the ones they know went horribly wrong] Which one? Libet or Draconis?

Draconis. You know, the one with the creepy virus of evil?

Sure do. We had a big fuckin' outbreak of it a few months ago ... back in the spring, I think it was? Some idiot brought it back from the caves at Lastlook.

... Which, I gotta ask: how the hell did it even get there? Is that close to where Draconis was?

[...Uh oh. Heath sends a panicked look Brewer's way, noticing the man is busy]

Yeah. We kind of put it there. For safe keeping. Everyone said the other castles were all empty, that everyone knew what happened to our castle and no one would go in there if they saw our sign over the door.

...Guess not. Sorry dude, that thing was a mess.

Whoa, hey. It's okay. [he holds up his free hand] We were able to get the cure, someone found your guy's notes on it. And we didn't lose anyone, so ...

No harm, no foul. Next time, though, try writin' the warning in a language everyone knows, yeah?

[Heath seems to relax a little. You never know with normies when the torches and pitchforks come out to play if they get pissy]

Here, we've been keeping it in the old sheriff's building. [He'll start towards what is...yep, definitely a sheriff's building]

Cool. ... So how long have you guys been here? I mean ... from what I heard, there were people from Paradisa who'd been here a few years ago, and then there was ... I think it was a tornado? So it must've gotten abandoned when that came through.

Only about a week, maybe less? [Heath shrugs] We've never been here before now, we spent a lot of time just travelling around.

So they came after you when you first got here? Or d'you figure they followed you from somewheres else?

Before we got here. I don't know if they were being massive creepers and following us for a while or what. They just came outta nowhere one day, right at us.

Maybe somehow they knew you came from the castle with the virus, and thought you'd be sick and easier to pick off...

National... isn't that a Normie show about science and stuff? I remember a friend of mine moaning about it. [Literally. Moaning about it, this is what happens when one of your friends is a zombie] She said it missed a lot of key points about...something something, I kind of stopped paying attention after a while.

It is, yeah. ... I never really thought it was really missin' much, but then again, I mostly watched it as a kid, because it was the only thing on that time'a night that my parents could find that I was able to watch at that age, and they didn't wanna gag themselves over.

Oh, shit, yeah. Totally. I called 'em on it a couple years ago, they didn't deny it. 'Least my Dad didn't, he laughed like hell. I told 'em it was okay, I didn't mind, 'cuz the animals were still pretty cool.

I guess so. I don't know, man. I'd feel pretty parent-trayed at that point.

[He chuckles giving a shrug] If there's anything I've learned, it's that absolutely anything can exist.
