Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield
[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.
More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.
Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.
Are they too late?]

He casts a smile at the young boy, hoping to put him at ease, relaxing his own posture. ]
One can hardly blame you. We react that way at times too, after all. We can assure you, though, we did not come with the intention to harm but to aid however we can. You did send the message, did you not?

[The kid seems pretty relaxed, giving him a lazy wave]

Then we shall provide all we can, as I said. Could you provide a more detailed list of what exactly you need help with?
[ He was a general at heart, born and raised, though he was more for the battle field than rescue/repair missions. Still, those skills could serve, but he might bow down and go help run security on the town where his expertise is better spent. ]

We need help getting this place defensible again, get some fences up, repair the buildings, make sure it's safe.

[ He nodded, understanding, eyes already flicking around and seeing such things. ]
Do you have a current defense force for the town? I admit I was never trained for building, but I am quite skilled at combat.

[He frowns softly, looking over at the buildings with people hiding in them] We just survive.

Well, then I think I shall round up some of our more combat knowledgeable group members and do something about security while you all repair. And if you like, I could take some time to give basic instruction on defense to those of your people willing and interested. Nothing complicated, but enough to help you survive a bit easier.

Then I will do what I can. I think some basic self-defense will be easiest with not much time. I shall see if others in the group will be available to teach as well.
