Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield

[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.

More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.

Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.

Are they too late?]

Sure I do. We can make split-rails pretty easily. We're just going to need some wood, and some people who don't mind swinging axes. [he frowns, scanning the town as he thinks]

But that's not going to keep those bug things out. We'll need something stronger for that, unless he just wants to slow them down long enough for us to pick them off.

Honestly? That might be the best hope we have right now. Even if we had the stuff to make something more heavy duty, I don't know if we'd have the time to finish it - or the people. But...

[Thinking, thinking]

If we get some people on the fence, we could probably get the rest on walls, or something. It wouldn't be the toughest barricade around, but hey, it's one more layer between us and the bugs, right?

We could, yeah. It's just a question of how much the people here are willing to tear down to make the walls and stuff... We don't want to use up so many resources that there's nowhere left to hide, either. But I can at least start with the fence.

[he offers her a hand] Oh, and - I'm Gale. Nice to meet you. I know I've seen you on the other trips [who could forget that hair] but I don't think we've ever really talked.

[Takes his hand, and shakes]

Just the last one, actually! And I'm Utena, Utena Tenjou. It's nice to meet you, too - oh, one thing, before we get started. I learned how to do some repairs back during the earthquake, buuut I can't say I've swung an axe before. Not that I'm not willing to learn! Just... thought I should warn you, first.

Then that's okay. Just leave the axe-swinging to other people and do what you know, for now. [he can't help but think of when he was learning the ropes, in the mines: how he'd started out doing the small things] It'll probably go faster, and we'll get more done, that way.

[Gives him a firm nod. She didn't want to leave him hanging, but this makes more sense. Figuring out how to do it - and do it properly - would just take up more time than anybody has.]

Got it. So! You get the wood, and I'll see what other supplies I can scrounge up. Meet you at the fence?

[If she can find the stuff she needs - and a few people to help - she'll get a head start on those repairs. If not, well, time to find a new job.]

Sounds like a plan. I'll start on what's already there, see how bad it is and what we're gonna need.
