Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - The Town of Fairfield

[You saw the towns some time ago, but it still took a good couple hours of treading past the farmland around it before you actually reached it. They have a distinctly "old western" type of feel to them, with their dusty, unpaved dirt roads and the collection of buildings-- most of them obviously wooden-- sitting side-by-side along either side of the road.

More observant residents may notice that the nearer they come to the town, the more people that look up and notice, and subsequently hurry off or head inside. And even if you didn't notice it as you closed in, it sure becomes apparent once you step under the archway of the town; there's no one around. The tumbleweed that rolls by almost seems to be mocking the residents.

Another thing that becomes apparent is the state of the town. Besides having gone eerily quiet, some of the buildings have been wrecked. There are gouges in the wood, where it hasn't been punched through or torn apart. Rails are broken, and a few of them even have damaged or missing doors.

Are they too late?]

[There's a note of familiarity in the man's voice, though Jane knows she's never seen him before. Her gaze breaks from the destruction in the town to look at him, war fork propped over her shoulder. She came prepared for a fight, it seems.]

Um...we're travelling together as a group of our own, sir. We heard a distress call and wanted to come and help. You wouldn't happen to be the fellow who sent it, would you?

[There might also be a curious eye for that winking boy. Doesn't miss a trick, this one.]

[He smiles, relieved]

I was. I'm Gene Brewer, and it's really good that you came. We've been in desperate need for help.

[The boy makes a 'call me' sign at her, until a sharp look from Brewer makes him stop and whistle innocently, starting at the clouds]

Gosh, I can see that. Is this all because of those Collectors?

[Raising an eyebrow at that boy. Come on dude, even she knows this is no time for jokes.]

[vesania]

It is, we've had no trouble from anyone else, we've always just been let be.

[The kid looks dejected for a moment, before wandering off to try to flirt with another girl. Whatevs your loss]

[More like totally his loss.]

So what have they been doing exactly? I mean, the name 'Collectors' brings a lot to mind, but there's speculation and there's specifics...

None of us know for certain. I've wondered if they're collecting us for experiments, to see what we're made of. But that's only speculation.

[cyan_maid]

Hmmm.

[It's an interesting theory, but there's got to be something more to it. Jane brings a hand to her chin and ponders.]

How often do they attack the town to capture people?

[vesania]

We've not been her long enough, and they don;t seem to have any set time of attacking.

[cyan_maid]

But has it happened more than once?

[vesania]

It has, a couple of time.

[cyan_maid]

Hmm. Okay.

[Seems a little odd to come back for more test subjects if they just wanted to see what people were made of, but she won't say that aloud.]

Is there anything we can do to help for now?

[vesania]

[Sadly, that's only Brewer's guess, the truth? Well...]

We need help in getting the town defensible again, so we can live here safely. We'd really appreciate any help we can get.

[cyan_maid]

Of course! We'll do what we can!

[vesania]

We'll return the favour, any way we can.

[cyan_maid]

[Aw that is really kind of him. Life can't be easy out here...]

It's the least we can do. It's how things work out here, anyway.

[Gosh, not from what she's heard about First Gens, but she likes his version a lot better.]
