[This afternoon, the quirky merriment at Terre Haute has something very sudden cutting its way in. There's the very distinct sound of an explosion. It shakes the ground with a small tremor for but a brief moment. Those who are looking at a certain monolith in the distance may see that there is now smoke coming from it, parts of it crumbling and tearing away as black smoke begin to fill the air.

Something's happening at that strange "thing" that fell from the sky. But what? Dare you disregard the unsettling feeling that may begin to steadily fill the air?]

No idea.

[He sounds very pleased about it. He glances up at her briefly before moving around the edge of the escalator.]

Have you got a good look? What do you see?

[She was good with details once, he assumes she can do it again.]

There's a lot of them. They've something shiny covering them. I thought it was plate, but I heard someone call it x-skeleton. [ close enough to exoskeleton. ] It works like plate anyway.

Exoskeleton. It functions like a plate, but it's a part of their body. It's not a common biology for creatures that size.

Of course, doesn't mean much for them if we're able to get through it and they don't have any other means of protection.

Mayhaps the Dead Zone stripped them of aught else. Not that we'll ever know here.

If it did, it didn't take anything they weren't already prepared to lose. They wouldn't be advancing if they felt especially vulnerable.

They're not even trying to fight. They're trying to grab people.

What?

[Oh, that has his interest.]

Grab people to harm them, or grab people to take them? The distinction is important.

To take them, it looks like. Why?

Because, it tells us something. [He's straining to get a better look, now. He can already feel the thoughts piecing themselves together in his head losing momentum in his throat; he has to pick and choose his words.] If it was just our presence that elicited this, why not just kill us? Neutralize the threat. But if-- [he clears his throat.] There must be a reason. Hostages, experimentation, food, whatever.

Is there a pattern to who they're meaning to take, or are they going at whoever comes at them first?

Whoever goes at them. They're not trying to fight anyone--just grab them.

Doesn't rule out targeting entirely, but there's only so many possible options if they aren't picky about who they're choosing.

Don't suppose they've been successful at taking anyone yet?

I haven't seen any…

Good. We'll have better luck getting at the reason if we can find others they've taken instead.
