Winchester/Fairfield Expedition - Day Two Open Mingle Post
[by now, everyone has had a chance to look around Fairfield and get their bearings, right? those who came along and remember it from a few years ago probably found a lot changed and in need of repairs.
as for the distress call, Dr. Brewer and his friend Heath have been pretty friendly and outgoing, but the other refugees from Draconis have stayed in hiding. maybe you're helping with the repairs, maybe you're trying to find those other refugees and see if they need help ... or maybe you're just wandering around and doing your own thing.
either way, there seems to be no sign of those creepy, crawly Collector bugs from Terre Haute, today, so you're free to do as you please! post in one of the sections provided, or make your own - it's all good!]
((OOC: Apologies if I seem to be stepping on any plotrunners' toes - this was done with
mod approval. Here are your section links: REPAIRS | AROUND TOWN | THE GRASSLANDS ))

May I ask why?
[ He arched a brow, glass clinking as he laid it down on the counter. ]

My kingdom was attacked by a Dragon. What few of my people who weren't killed fled my kingdom, and the Elves arrived just as we were fleeing. When I called to them for help, they turned their backs and abandoned us.
They're nothing but useless cowards, the lot of them.
no subject
[ He frowned, considering. Legolas and Gladriel hardly seemed like cowards, though he knew not all could be like them. The generalization worried him, and the pain in the others words was obvious, the anger too.
It also sounded like seeking someone to blame in the depths of the ache. Ashura could relate, though his own ache had not involved the collapse of his people. ]
You say you are a warrior, that your people are. If you could not best the dragon, how could they? A dragon is no mean beast to try and best, after all.
no subject
Understand, we'd had peace for hundreds of years. We never saw the dragon coming. We had warriors, but we were ill-prepared for a dragon attack.
And I did not ask the Elves to fight. I would have liked it, yes. I would have loved if the kingdom my clan had known all their lives had not been taken. But the Elves offered us no help at all, not even to help us recover from the attack.
no subject
No, I don't suppose you could prepare for an attack on that scale...
[ It made him glad his own world did not have dragons to contend with, but they had their own worries, with something less... predictable. Well, no, it was predictable, it was what happened in its name that was not. Who would die that night, if the battle would finally be won...
The memories made his brow furrow slightly, wondering how his people fared. Were they surviving without him? ]
I am sorry for your loss and your hardship. I do not mean to make light of your anger or to dissuade it, only... I have known elves too. Your anger was surprising, and does not match what I know of her and the others I have met.
no subject
You speak of that Lady Galadriel? Or is there another she-elf in this place?
[His tone when mentioning Galadriel isn't as sour as it is with discussing other Elves. Truth be told he doesn't mind her so much - he finds her vexing, but she doesn't anger him so much.]
no subject
Yes, that would be her. She has been here almost as long as I have. I count her as a friend and a great source of wisdom. And of tea.
[ He nodded to himself and sipped his drink again, though that tiny furrow remained on his brow, mind fluttering back to his people. When had he last properly thought of them? In awhile, he thought and for a minute he felt shamed. ]

What troubles you, lad?
no subject
[ He laughed at the term despite himself. It had been a long time since he was called 'lad', and even then it had only been by Galadriel, whose age out paced his by centuries. ]
Lad - I have not been called that in an age, I think.
As for your question, I would not want to burden you with the weight of another king's concerns. You seem to have enough of your own, I doubt you need mine atop yours.
no subject
A reflex of the tongue.
[The word is commonly used among Dwarves; Thorin has even been known to refer to Dwarves several age his senior as 'lad'.]
I will not pry if it would displease you. S'not my business to ask another man's troubles. But should you feel overwhelmed, know that I will listen.
no subject
[ooc: speaking of listening don't know if he would get involved in this, but if you want to... ]
[ He smiled at that and he nodded, sipping the last of his drink, tossing his head back and making midnight hair wave and his pale throat bob. ]
It is a concern centuries old, pronounced at times. But I suppose it is a king's way to ever worry for his people, even when he can do nothing for them at the time of the worry.
no subject
[Thorin takes a long drink, finishing his off for a second time. He holds out the little that's left in the bottle to Ashura, offering it to him.]
Oh, aye, I know this too well. That is our burden to bear as kings, is it not? We not only bear the weight of our own grief, but we must bear the weight of responsibility for the happiness or suffering of our people.
Absent or not, we are kings. It is in our nature to worry. If we did not have that worry, we would be poor kings indeed!
no subject
Oh aye, I agree. I admit, my worry has been lax lately, but only because nearly four years here has... distanced me, I think.
no subject
[Thorin shakes his head - wondering if he'll be forced to stay that long. But it doesn't sound so bad, when he thinks it over.]
no subject
You make a life here, and you live it.
[ He shrugged his shoulders, though briefly he touched a ring made of red and gold on his finger, the ring itself shaped like a phoenix cupping the ruby. ]
no subject
[He's not certain how he feels about that...]
I had a life and loves of my own in my world. I do not wish to replace them here.
no subject
[ Ashura shook his head. ]
No, not replace. I cannot replace my world and the things there with the places here. But add to them? Yes. There is always room for a bit more in your life.
no subject
You have a point, I suppose...it has been interesting to hear other peoples' stories, at least...
no subject
They are fascinating, and... eye opening in some cases. Everyone has a story, and I am better for hearing them.
