paradisabeyond | Lastlook: Entering the River

[For the past day or so, it's pretty clear the Amber Steppe has been left behind and the Totem Coast is getting closer. The air is more humid and the undergrowth has gone from a burnt amber color to be thicker, greender, and almost bordering on jungle-like. Several other streams have joined the one that the explorers have been following until it's almost large enough to start sailing on. Raine had encouraged everyone to press on, though, not sure it was time just yet (and also because she doesn't particularly like boats, okay). The cliffs around them start to grow up as well, and it probably won't be too long before the jungle becomes a properly impassable one, leaving the river as the only choice.

But this morning, another large stream had joined up with their and now it was more like a proper river. In the late morning they reach a large pier with five boats. The river also begins to take a higher road from here downstream, while the jungle starts to clog the lower road. Looks like it won't be too much longer before they're in the very painting that led them here. It's time to investigate those boats - and unload the smaller onces Percy Jackson has packed. And if you don't trust either of these, there are some inflatable rafts that Raine has packed as well.

So let's load up, and they'll be on the water by the afternoon!]

Ah... Must have been my nerves... Sorry, I'm still paranoid that something might happen.

It's fine...but goodness, whatever could you be paranoid for? The trip has been relatively peaceful so far.

[the sudden smacking motion makes him flinch, but he blinks]

Oh! Eugh, yes, that's what I was shouting about. They're everywhere in here!

She didn't leave with us, but she had been tailing along the whole time... And it seems not many noticed her.

[The spiders seem to be a trigger, as he twitches and unconsciously scratches his neck. He goes over to one and looks at it hard.]

...Not her spiders... [But for good measure, he steps on it]

Do you know if she's from the castle?

[Yeah, now the spiders can wait, this sounds kind of serious.]

It seems like it... [Don't mind if he's mindlessly looking around and killing spiders with his palm]

No one is sure?

[Not minding at all! Jane is going to start looking for them again too.]

She doesn't seem to like men, but otherwise she's... okay I guess.

[at this point, he has so much spider guts on his hands, it's starting to gross even him out]

...There has to be an easier way to do this.

[She notices the spider guts.] Oh! Gosh, yes, I agree, but I'm not quite sure what it would be. We can't just let them run amok...

Yes... This many spiders in one area is too suspicious...

Um...oh! [She pulls off one of her shoes.] Let's use our shoes!

O--Okay... [He kicks off his boots and flails them like chopping knives in the air]

[She watches that for a moment before she laughs.]

Hoo hoo, well that's one way to do it! [Time to hunt down some spiders!]

They're only small spiders... Might as well have some fun.

I'm pretty sure I saw some sizable ones, though!

[Got one in the corner!]

Do they go up to your knees?

[Stamping on the walls now ahhhh]

Not that I've seen!

Then they're still small.

...You've seen spiders that are as tall as your KNEES?!?

There's a reason we avoided the Eldritch Forest...

[She squeaks and drops her shoe.]

Oh God! I had no idea!!

We fought some bigger than that there.

[She pales.]

...It's a good thing these are so small, then...

Yeah... [He pauses in silence and then throws one of his boots at one on the ceiling]
